Thursday 7 December 2006, Glasgow Caledonian University

This SIG meeting focused on current developments in the educational content area. The morning was dedicated to updates on packaging specifications. Wilbert Kraan from JISC CETIS gave an overview of the status of IMS Content Packaging v1.2 and the IEEE RAMLET work. This was followed by a longer presentation from Kevin Riley from IMS who introduced the IMS Common Cartridge Common Cartridge specification. This application profile of IMS Content Packaging using a number of other IMS specifications is claiming to provide a truly interoperable way of transporting content between learning systems. The specification is still in development but has the backing of a number of major LMS vendors and publishers.

The afternoon focused more on learning activity and the use of content, starting with a presentation from Patrick McAndrew on the OU's Open Learn OpenLearn project . Sponsored by the Mellon Foundation, this project is following on the heels of the MIT OpenCourseWare initiative, and for the first time is making OU content and tools freely available to anyone to use and develop. This was followed by a look at the current JISC Design for Learning Programme, with Isobel Falconer from GCU giving a presentation on the Models for Learning project (MOD4L) and some of their findings about sharing and re-use of learning designs.
